The first step to really organizing your closet is to remove everything, including hangers, baskets, bins, and anything else that might be on the floor or shelves. Take it all out and give the space a thorough clean. You need this clear space in order to visualize how to re-organize your closet. Consider the following tips as you plan.
- Group like with like: Gather similar items and decide where to store items as a group. Working in groups of items will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
- Utilize real estate: Reserve the front and middle of your closet for clothes you wear most often. If you have to get dressed for work each morning, make sure your work clothes are at the front of your closet. Whereas items like formal wear and seasonal clothes should be stored at the back and on the top shelves.
When planning, make sure to use all of your available space and place things in an attractive way to motivate ongoing maintenance. Think about where it makes sense to store each category of clothing and then think about the easiest spots to reach in your closet.
